The NHN is home to a large number of specimens that were collected by Mizutani Sukeroku, Ohkouchi Zonshin, Ito Keisuke, Katsuragawa Hoken, and others. The author has found 31 specimens (24 flowering plants, 5 pteridophyte) in the NHN that were collected by Kumakichi, the boy employed by Siebold to tend to his daily needs. NHN's donation to the Tokyo University Museum includes two: Salvia plebeia R. Br. (TI No. 025) and Vitis ficifolia Bunge (TI No. 239).
The two samples have strips of paper bearing the month and day on which they were collected and Kumakichi's name written in black ink, from which we learn that they were collected in 1827, the year of the Boar.
