Specimens collected by Jacques Pierot (1812-1841)

Siebold wished to continue researching Japanese plant species even after returning to the Netherlands and so dispatched Pierot, a young Dutch botanist of French extraction, to Japan. However, Pierot never actually reached Japanese shores having died en route after a stint at the Beitenzorf Botanical Garden in Java, Indonesia. Notwithstanding, many of Pierot's specimens are stored in the NHN. These were privately owned specimens that Pierot bought from Bürger upon the latter's return to Batavia.

The following 16 Pierot specimens were donated to Tokyo University Museum by NHN.

The specimens collected by Jacques Pierot that are stored in the NHN are readily identifiable since they bear labels written in Pierot's own hand, regrettably, however, these labels were not attached to the samples stored in the Tokyo University Museum.
