Omoto Papilionidae

Dr. Keiichi Omoto (1933– ), professor emeritus of the University of Tokyo, is a leading anthropologist and lepidopterist. In 2013, his collection was donated to the University Museum, the University of Tokyo (Omoto, 2013). This great collection is composed of approximately 30,000 butterfly specimens from mainly Eurasia, and includes a large number of very rare and valuable species.

The University Museum, The University of Tokyo, is currently databasing numerous museum specimens as the University Museum Database (UMDB) project, making it available to the public as supporting data for various research fields. As part of this project, we have compiled a list of the subfamily Baroniinae and Parnassiinae of the family Papilionidae in the Omoto collection, which was released in the “Material Reports” series and on the website of the university museum (Yago et al., 2019, 2020). His personal history and an overview of the collection were mentioned in the introduction of part 1 of the catalogue.

Following publication of the Baroniinae and Parnassiinae, we here release part 2 of "Catalogue of the Keiichi Omoto Butterfly Collection", covering the papilionine data of the Papilionidae, on the website. The insect collection contains a total of 1,664 butterfly specimens arranged in 59 specimen boxes. Of particular interest are a number of precious species such as Chilasa moerneri, Chilasa carolinensis, Iphiclides podalirinus and Parides burchellanus, the latter of which are currently listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). There are also a small number of type specimens including the holotype originally described by Omoto himself such as the subspecies miyakoensis of Byasa alcinous. Moreover, it should be noted that this collection contains many specimens of the Papilio machaon group and the subgenus Achillides species in the Palearctic region. The specific and subspecific classification and identification of the catalogue followed those of Braby (2000)、D'Abrera (1971, 1981, 1982, 1990)、Inomata et al. (2013)、Matsuka (2001)、Monastyrskii (2007)、Monastyrskii & Devyatkin (2016)、Möhn (2006)、Parsons (1998)、Schäffler (2001)、Shiraiwa et al. (2014)、Sturm (2017)、Tsukada & Nishiyama (1980)、Tyler et al. (1994)、Warren et al. (2017) and Wu & Hsu (2017).

This database not only contributes much to taxonomy and biogeography, but also provides an inventory that underlies biodiversity conservation. Such distribution data may be basic information for spatial analysis of patterns formed by environmental issues such as global warming and deforestation. We hope that by publishing this database, it will promote to the public the importance of preserving and cataloging scientific specimens and creating museum collections.
