The desirn for "U-PROJECT" was what we proposed for a complex of cultural facitlies planned to be constructed in a prefecture in the periphery of a city in the Shikoku Island.
Though our plan was evaluated to be the best one in the competition among the 10 inviting architects, the order was actually awarded to another plan, due to political reasons. The head of the panel issued letters requesting for reconsideration to the prefectural governor and the head of the relevant self-governing body, which was not accepted.
The complex was constituted by a hall to accomodate 500 audience, a library to possess 40 thousand books, and facilities for life-long education.
As it was planned to be constructed in the peripheric area close to residential districts, our plan was based on the following architectural concept in consideration of this:
- The profile of the complex should be kept as low as possible to fit the surroundings.
- Space to work as an engawa (a porch) to interconnect the overall facilities with the town it is located should be established.
- A specially shaped roof covered with greened rooftops should be employed in consideration of townscapes and environments.
- Maximum employment of ecological materials.
- Each architectural space should have a touch and sense of four seasons and nature.
If it were realized, the above-described architectural space would be an epoch-making piece of architecture; however, no chance to come true was given to the design, to our regret.
