Head length less than body depth. End of jaws on the vertical through anterior or posterior nostril. Interorbital area slightly or well convex. Fourth dorsal spine longest. 6 scale rows between lateral line and median dorsal spines. Inner base of pectoral without scales or sometimes with a few scales. Lateral teeth of jaws include strong molars in adults.

Distribution. —East Africa to Ryukyus, New Guinea.

Remarks. —The type of Bodianus lentjan is a dried half skin and it is difficult to examine sufficiently. In fact, the identity of this type with the present species is doubtful, especially judging from the shape of the teeth. The lateral teeth in this specimen seem smaller and more pointed than in the present species. But the name lentjan is provisionally adopted here because this name has often been used recently for the present species. More detailed examination is necessary to determine the valid name for this species.

For the comment on the type of L. geniguttatus, see the remarks for L. haematopterus.
