CHAPTER II     DESCRIPTION OF SITES

The sites surveyed by us in Lebanon and Syria are approximately 200 in number, including cave and open sites. The number of sites to be reported here, after sorting out the records of survey, and collected flints and bones, is 24 in Lebanon and 75 in Syria. The sites which are considered to be worth reporting are mainly those which have not been mentioned in any literature before and, therefore, are the ones recorded for the first time by our expedition. In addition, some of the sites are included which had already been discovered by other researchers and mentioned in some literature, and which have good deposits and are thought to be worthy of future excavation yet remain unexplored and unclaimed by any researcher as coming under their jurisdiction.

The description of sites is made in the following order:

  1. Location of site (The geographical position of each site is plotted by number on the distribution map of sites).
  2. Characteristics of the sites and conditions of deposit (Terms used in this report as to the forms of cave, shelter and terrace is shown in Fig. 37).
  3. Estimate of period (Ref. Chapter III as to the result of analysis of flints which is the criterion for estimate of period).
  4. Reference (To reports on already discovered sites only. History of discovery and other related literature).
