Japanese name. Marubahagi (Makino & Nemoto, 1925), Miyamahagi (Matsumura, 1902).

A perennial plant, 1.5-2.5 m high. Stems ascending, 0.5-1 m high, 1-5 cm in diam eter; most of the terrestrial part ives a few years; branched in upper parts (a few branches coming from basal part of the stem). Branches terete, ascending, some-times dependent later; when young slightly angular with densely ascending appressed-sericeous hairs (hairs 0.3 mm long, whitish), later glabrescent; distal parts die in winter season, proximal parts (and the stem) with axillary and adventitious winter buds (winter buds at lower parts mostly dormant).

Leaves trifoliolate, petiolate, stipulate, spirally arranged. Stipules free, linear-triangular to linear, 2-7 mm long, brownish, persistent. Petioles 0.5-4 cm long, hairy like the young branch. Rachides 5-15 mm long, similar to the petiole. Terminal leaf-lets (at middle parts of branches) petiolulate; petiolules 1-3 mm long, swollen; lamina thick, 2-5 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, entire, (broadly to narrowly) elliptic to ob-ovate, round or cuneate at the base, obtuse or retuse at the apex (the apex itself with or without a point), upper surface glabrous or sericeous or glabrescent (except along the midrib) (hairs ca. 0.2 mm long) at the anthesis, lower surface appressed-sericeous (hairs 0.3-0.5 mm long); lateral ones similar to terminal but somewhat smaller.

Inflorescence axillary racemous, one at an axil, 1-2 cm long including the peduncle, very compactly 4-10-flowered; peduncles 0.5-1 cm long (rarely elongating up to 3 cm or more), hairy like the young branch. Primary bracts ovate, about 1 mm long, pubescent, persistent; secondary bracts similar to primary ones.

Flowers 8.9-12.6 mm long at anthesis; pedicels 0.8-3 mm long, terete, curved, tomentose. Bracteoles at the base of the calyx broadly to narrowly ovate or obtuse, 0.6-1.2 mm long, pubescent outside, glabrous inside, persistent. Calyx 4.5-6.2 mm long, tubulate, four-lobed more than the middle part, densely appressed pubescent; tube 2.2-2.7 mm long; lobes subequal in length or the lower one longest; lateral ones 2.3-3.5 mm long, 0.9-1.2 mm wide, triangular-lanceolate, acuminate at the apex; upper one occasionally slightly two-clefted.

Standard longer than keel-petal and wings, keel-petal shorter than wings (S>W>K). Standard red-purple inside, paler outside, whitish near the base, obovate, 8.1-12.4 mm long, 4.6-6.8 mm wide, round or retuse at the apex with or without a point attenuated at the base without distinct claw, inflexed-auriculate near the base, spreading in anthesis from the part almost 1/2 the way from the base. Wings deeper red-purple than standard, 8.1-10.7 mm long with distinct claw; lamina narrowly obo-vate to obovate, 5.0-6.8 mm long, 1.8-2.4 mm wide, auriculate at upper basal part; claw 3.5-4.5 mm long, whitish. Keel-petal 7.6-9.6 mm long with distinct claw; lam-ina obovate, 4.0-5.1 mm long, 2.1-2.7 mm wide, paler than wings, deepest in the apical part; claw 3.6-5.0 mm long, whitish. Stamens 10, nearly same length, 7.4-9.4 mm long, diadelphous. Anthers elliptic, shallowly retuse at the apex, ca. 0.5 mm long, before anthesis yellow. Pistils 7.5-9.5 mm long; ovary elliptic, 1.5-2 mm long at anthesis, pubescent, subsessile; style 7-8 mm long, pubescent at the basal part, glabrescent at the apical part.

Fruits compressed broadly elliptic, 4.5-5.5 mm long, 3.5-4.5 mm wide, subses-sile, densely pubescent.

Seeds reniform, ca. 3 mm long, ca. 2 mm wide.

This species is well characterized by calyx-lobes with acuminate apices, wings longer than keel-petals, and inflorescences that are usually shorter than subtending leaves. Some plants, however, have inflorescences longer than the subtending leaves, and are identical to the type of var. pedunculata by Nakai (1927). In these, the inflores-cences have longer raches but the internodes of flowers remain short, and the flowers are compactly crowded near the apical part. Nakai also described another variety, var. longiramea, which has elongated branches (up to 1-3 m long) without branchlets. As these forms are found sporadically throughout the range and intermediate forms are frequently observed, we are reluctant to treat those varieties above as separate taxa, even asform rank.

Var. acutifolia H. Koidz. is characterized by elliptic leaves with an acute to cuneate base and an acute apex, although the shape of leaflets varies from broadly to narrowly elliptic to obovate by individuals. L. anthobotrya Ricker is characterized by "nearly sessile, mostly terminal, clusters" and a calyx with "acuminate teeth" which distin-guish it from L. cyrtobotrya. But its diagnostic characters of calyx and inflorescence agree with those of L. cyrtobotrya and the shape of leaflets is variable, so it appears reasonable to recognize it as conspecific with L. cyrtobotrya even though we have not been able to examine a type specimen of L. anthrobotrya.

HONSHU. OSAKA. Kongosan (Kongo-san, Mt. Kongo) (Tada, 22 Aug. 1897, TI-Lecto-type and syntype of L. kawachiana Nakai).

Among the specimens cited under L. cyrtobotrya, those referrable to f. kawachiana are marked with an asterisk.

This form is found sporadically in the distribution range of L. cyrtobotrya. The offspring of an individual of f. kawachiana have also branches and inflorescence axes with patent hairs, so it is considered that the direction of hairs on branches and in-florescence axes is determined hereditarily.
