Introduction

Dr. Keiichi Omoto (1933–), Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, is widely recognized both as a distinguished anthropologist and as an entomologist. His extensive insect collection, focusing primarily on butterflies, is composed of approximately 30,000 specimens, with a strong emphasis on species from Eurasia. The collection is particularly rich in species from the Palearctic region, which are exceptionally well represented. In 2013, Dr. Omoto donated this collection to The University Museum, The University of Tokyo (Omoto, 2013).
The University Museum has been actively working to create a database of its collections and make them publicly accessible through online platforms and printed catalogues. As part of this ongoing effort, the first and second parts of the Omoto Collection—covering parnassiine and papilionine specimens of the family Papilionidae—were databased and made available online (Yago et al., 2019, 2021a). These were also published in the museum’s Material Reports series (Yago et al., 2020, 2021b). A detailed overview of Dr. Omoto’s career and a summary of his collection is provided in the introduction of the first part.
Following the online release and publication of the previous catalogues, the third part of the Keiichi Omoto Collection, which comprises specimens of the subfamily Satyrinae (Nymphalidae), is available here on the museum website. The satyrine dataset consists of 8,584 specimens housed in 87 specimen boxes. Particularly noteworthy is the near-comprehensive coverage of satyrine species and subspecies from the Palearctic region, along with detailed collection data. This collection includes numerous rare and valuable specimens collected by historically significant lepidopterists such as H. Höne, A. Schulte, W. Eckweiler, and C. Wyatt. It also contains many specimens that are currently difficult to obtain, as well as type specimens used by Dr. Omoto in the descriptions of new species and subspecies. As a specialized collection focusing on Palearctic Satyrinae, it is among the most significant both in Japan and internationally. It represents an invaluable resource for taxonomic and biogeographical studies, as well as for biodiversity conservation in the region.
This database has been submitted to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), thereby contributing to the global dissemination of biodiversity data. We hope that its open accessibility will support research and conservation efforts both domestically and internationally, while also highlighting the importance of museum collections to the broader public.
