LONG-LIFE SPACE CONNECTING TIME

-THOUGHTS ON MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES-
Difference between possible and impossible
-What men has accomplishes in last one hundred years?

We human being have developed our life at various field in last one hundred years. In the environment surrounding the earth, we have successfully started discovering universe and the deep sea. They also made remarkable development in the field of human bodies. Organ transplant, External fertilization and Genetic Manipulation have been accomplish. An example of clone has born.

Various development has been made in social environment. Expansion of media brought all world an occasion to make simultaneous conversation both visually and acoustically‐It also made us easier to get various informations, which are traveling around the world in tremendous speed. The use of nuclear power has not only produced vast energy but also helped developing weapons.

Transportation, timewarp, conversation with non‐human creature, reading future on somebody's mind, non‐aging or dying、reviving the dead etc. Above ideas may not be realized by end of this century, but may be possible in one hundred years.

Diverse developments have also been made in the field of architecture. It is desirable that space for men to live in correspond timely to each occasion in use, and also live a long life as an architecture. To create a space which correspond timely to each and every occasion may be an eternal theme in architecture. People have made various attempts in relation to nature in every historical era, to realized long‐life space. They built their living space by utilizing nature with men power and technology, on by living along with nature like mobile dweller. On the other hand, they controlled, destroyed, and ruled the nature to expand their living realms.

Difference between Possible and Impossible in the field of Architecture

-What men could do now in Architecture?

  • to build a highter structure
  • to build a longer-span structure
  • to build a glass structure
  • to build a earthquake proof structure
  • to build a material-respected structure

-What men could not do now in Architecture?

  • to build an eternally lasting structure
  • to relocate a building easily
  • not to produce waste materials when dismantling building

    Metamorphosis of Space

Impossible Space becomes Possible by Corresponding timely to each occasion Respecting Character of each Materials

Point of Metamorphosis (An occasion when one thing turn into another)

  • By thermal change
  • Solid→Liquid→Gas
  • Change life of Mobile Dweller(ex. nomads)
  • Birdspassage, Moving orhibernation of fishes and insects, etc.
  • By shock・Reaction of Nitroglycerin
  • Reaction of Nitroglycerin
  • Operation of Airbag
  • Operation of earthquake avoiding/controling system on high‐rise building, etc.
  • By time‐passing
  • Aging
  • Growing
  • Global change of nature and earth
  • Recycling materials
  • By fusion
  • nuclear fusion
  • 2H2+O2=2H2O
  • Men&Women→Husband&Wife/Children/Family/Society/Nature
  • Cooking food

Metamorphosis of Space - Metamorphosis of Architecture

It may be a world in dream. Metamorphosis of space is a flexible corresponding of space to its situation, caused by certain external action. The space turn into some other thing from what it was before, or just changing its character. approaching men and society with different meanings. This Metamorphosis of spate and architecture might probably be a timely reaction of structure or materials itself, which made possible by various technological develop-ments improvements and interfusion. For instance, a joint suddenly become crystal-lized, or an ordinary wall immediately change into a stiff wall, reacting to the shock of earthquake or the change of temperature in case of fire. The crystallizes joint or the stiff wall come back to previous condition after certain period.

Metamorphosis of space may be rediscovered by having a understanding of chemical reactions between powder and gas, liquid and gas, and between powder and liquid. As for spatial structure, recycling structure or material itself also result in creating long-life space. Men has invented a mobile dwelling like gel : They brought up a Metamorphosing space which could be dismantled or reassembled according to national condition. The building like this mobile dwelling which easy to dismantle or reassemble, could maintain its space semi-permanently, just by partial renewal or fixing. Turning the viewpoint slightly and applying this idea into contemporary architecture, the building will get longer life without dismantling the entire structure. We could think of a building designed for easy replacement or reinforcement of its main or sub-structure. Or a building of which sub frame gradually take the place of main-frame as time progresses, etc. Metamorphosis of space could go beyond the contemporary ‘real’world. If things above maintained will be realized, men could probably go further than the present boundary of impossible and possible. However, we should never forget the fact that “Architecture lives along with Man”. Architects profession will widely effect concurrent Metamorphosis of man and their society.
