Yokohama international port terminal design competition
Introduction
After the opening as a port city, Yokohama itself maintains fragmented description of the time to time charges. I was grown up in Yokohama. And those image of the city, bayside was described by the image of continuous industrial cranes standing on water side, gray scenery which came form repeated warehouse, and the trucks moving around it. However, we have seen a tendency to pull back people to a water side by a change of recent system of culture as well as industry.A pier projecting by length of 500 m gives a great context to this location. And it will come to give great influence to scenery around it. This proposal gives new landscapes in Yokohama Bay.
(1) Possibility / Analysis of architecture.
approach: Even if a building is going to be built on this site. There is the anxiety that the scene of Yokohama Bay has been divided by its length. direction: No object, floated slab, or transparency like a water. (2) Answer as a Landscape
approach: It isn't an architecture, but....... direction: Undulated slab of the continuous ground. Ground is knitted, like a wave. The island that floats on the wave (slab). (3) Program
(4) six structural objects
approach: Axis, it goes from an axis of city toward Yokohama Bay. direction: Although site has a straight axis, it became a datum (order). And it is sifted toward the entrance of the Bay (Bay Bridge). Therefore, plan opens up to the outer sea. approach: Architecture engaged by ship-yard technology. (Aggressive structural strategy) direction: A floating architecture, and the dramatic scenery that opens up to the space (ground). We are trying to make image of scenery as been used by ship-yard technology.
The scenery where this Architecture (woven slab) is lifted up by several objects (mass), mass is constructed by double Hulled structure. Our dream is entrusted in it.
CREDIT
approach: Metaphorical structure came from historical reference. direction: This project is structurally stabilized by 6 objects setting into the certain position.6 objects means the countries, which were involved for the opening as a port, ANSEI JOWYAKU of Yokohama port in 1858.
