DESCRIPTION :	A small site near the Tigris at Nineveh. The 1930's the excavations of Max Mallowan revealed a sequence of ten architectural phases of Ubaid levels (TT 1-4) over Halaf levels (TT6-10), with an intermediate transitional phase. Mallowan found the first examples of the typical Halafian round building: the tholos. Moreover, large numbers of well-made and beautifully painted Halaf pottery were found, especially in the so-called Burnt House of level TT6. Re-investigations in the 1970's by Hijara revealed more levels with rectangular architecture. The excavations at Arpachiyah were at the basis of the division of the Halaf period in Early, Middle and Late phases.
