Reason and Measure

In Christian iconology, the Lord of Creation is represented in the form of a figure spreadig out both arms to describe a circle. With a change in form from the spread-out arms to a compass, the theme of the creation of heaven and earth by God is represented in the figure of a human being measuring the earth. Thus measuring devices and the rational minds that use them play an important role in Christian accounts of the creation of the universe. An "earth" without "form," that is "chaos," is transformed into a world with order (a cosmos) through the operation of reason and measure. At a glance, it is clear that "reason and measure," which can also comprehend human phenomena, are deeply linked to the myths related to the origin of the universe.
