The Flora and Fauna of Japan are recurring themes in the joint celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the Dutch-Japanese relations this year. In the Great Dejima Exhibition travelling from Leiden to Nagasaki and Tokyo, herbarium specimens and wood samples collected by Von Siebold and various other botanists working from Dejima were on display, and the Ibaraki Nature Museum devoted a very successful exhibtion to “Von Siebold's Perspective on Japan's Nature”. Almost all biological objects for these exhibitions came from the rich collections in Leiden : plants from the Leiden University Branch of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands （formerly the Rijksherbarium）and animals from the National Natural History Museum Naturalis. The historical Japanese botanical collections in Leiden were the basis of Siebold & Zuccarini's Flora Japonica and are the subject of ongoing research by Japanese scholars, most recently by Profs. Nobushige Kato and Takao Yamaguchi, who have published extensive studies in the Japanese periodical Calanus. Dissemination of information on Von Siebold's collections in Leiden has been our motivation behind the production of a CD-ROM on Von Siebold's Botanical Tereasures in Leiden （see more information elsewhere in this booklet）. It was a great honour to present a first copy of this CD-ROM to their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan during their state visit to the Netherlands on the 25th of May this year. In this way much information on these collections that is of continued importance for the scientific naming of Japanese plants is repatriated to its country of origin. In the future we hope to make all information on this historical, so-called Herba-rium Japonicum, available on our website. In this festive anniversary year, we would like to combine these temporary and digital activities with a more concrete gesture, and donate a set of specimens collected by Von Siebold and his assistents, and by some of his successors on the island of Dejima to the University Museum of the University of Tokyo. These specimens should feel at home among the more recent collections of the Tokyo University Herbarium-a world class botanical institution with which it is a privilege for us to foster cooperation in such international projects as Flora Malesiana and other Asiatic flora projects. On behalf of the entire staff of the National Herbarium Nederland and of Leiden University I send best wishes and cordial greetings to our botanical colleagues in Japan. シーボルト植物標本の寄贈にあたって

日本の植物相と動物相のことは，オランダと日本の交流400周年を祝う共同の祝典において，改めて取上げるべき主題です．ライデンから長崎・東京へと巡回した「大出島展」では，長崎の出島で仕事したシーボルトやその他の色々な植物学者が採集した植物標本や木材標本が展示され，また，茨城自然博物館は「シーボルトの愛した日本の自然」というたいへん立派な展示を行いました．これらの展示では，展示物の中で生物とそれに関係するものは，ほとんどすべてライデンにある豊富なコレクションが用いられました．すなわち，植物はオランダ国立植物学博物館ライデン大学分館（旧，王立植物標本館），動物は国立自然史博物館Naturalisが収蔵する標本です． ライデンにある日本の植物の歴史的なコレクションはシーボルトとツッツカリーニの著作『フロラ・ヤポニカ』（Flora Japonica，日本植物誌ともいう）の基礎となったもので，現在でも日本の学者らによって研究が続けられています．もっとも最近では加藤僖重教授と山口隆男教授が日本の定期刊行物Calanusに彼らの精力的な研究結果を発表しています． ライデンにあるシーボルト・コレクションについての情報を普及させたいということが，『植物学の至宝，シーボルト・コレクション』の制作の動機でした（このCD−ROMについては本冊子の4章を参照）．本年5月25日に天皇皇后両陛下がオランダを公式訪問された際，両陛下にこのCD−ROMの最初の1枚を贈呈できたことはたいへん名誉なことでした．このようなかたちで，日本の植物の命名と分類にとって重要性を保ち続けるこれらのコレクションについての多くの情報が，その原産国へと帰還したのです．将来的には，この歴史的な，HerbariHm Japonicum（日本産の植物標本）と呼んでいる日本産植物標本について，すべての情報をわれわれのウェブサイトでも利用することができるようにしたいと望んでいます． オランダと日本の交流400周年に当たる記念すべき年に，私たちはこれらの展示やデジタル化を一層かたちある行為と結び付けたいと考え，シーボルトと彼の助手そして出島でのシーボルトの継承者らによって収集された標本一式を東京大学総合研究博物館に贈ることにしました．これらの標本は東京大学の博物館が収蔵する新しい植物標本のコレクションの中で，居心地よく感じるにちがいないでしょう．東京大学の植物標本室は世界的な植物研究機関で，私たちはフロラ・マレーシア地域やその他のアジア地域の植物相についての数ある国際的なプロジェクトで協力関係を育むという恩恵に浴しています． オランダの国立植物博物館とライデン大学のスタッフ全員に代わって，私は日本の植物学者に対して心からの挨拶を述べるものです．私たちの惑星である地球の植物学的な多様性についての共通の興味が，私たちのかけがえのない貴重な自然資源，すなわち植物の世界を保全し，賢明に活用することの助けとなりますように． ピーター・バース |
