Japanese name. Tsukushihagi (Nakai, 1927), Nikko-shirahagi (Nakai, 1927).

A perennial plant, 1.5-2.5 m high. Stems ascending, 0.5-1 m high, 1-3(-5) cm in diameter; branched in upper parts (a few branches coming from basal part of the stem). Branches terete, ascending, sometimes dependent later; when young slightly angular with ascending appressed-sericeous hairs (hairs 0.2-0.3 mm long, whitish), later glabrescent; distal parts die in winter, proximal parts (and stem) with axillary and adventitious winter buds (winter buds at lower parts mostly dormant).

Leaves trifoliolate, petiolate, stipulate, spirally arranged. Stipules free, linear-triangular to linear, 2-7 mm long, brownish, persistent, Petioles 0.5-4 cm long, al-most glabrous. Rachides 5-15 mm long, similar to the petiole. Terminal leaflets (at middle parts of branches) petiolulate; petiolules 1-3 mm long, swollen; lamina sometimes reddish, 2-6 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm wide, entire, (broadly) elliptic to (broadly) ovate, round at the base, retuse or obtuse at the apex (the apex itself with or without a point), upper surface glabrous (except along the midrib), lower surface appressed-sericeous (hairs 0.1-(0.15) mm long); lateral ones similar to terminal but somewhat smaller.

Inflorescence axillary racemous, one (rarely 2-3) per axil, (2-)4-10(-15) cm long including the peduncle, somewhat loosely 4-12-flowered; peduncles 1-4 cm long, hairy like the young branch. Primary bracts ovate, about 1 mm long, pubescent, persistent; secondary bracts similar to primary ones.

Flowers 9.4-14.4 mm long at anthesis; pedicels 0.8-3 mm long terete, curved, tomentose. Bracteoles at the base of the calyx broadly to narrowly ovate or obtuse, 0.6-1.2 mm long, pubescent outside, glabrous inside, persistent. Calyx 3.6-4.4 mm long, tubulate, four- or sometimes five-lobed near the middle part or above, appressed-pubescent; tube 1.7-2.4 mm long; lobes subequal in length or the lower one longest; lateral ones 1.7-2.5 mm long, 1.0-1.6 mm wide, broadly elliptic to elliptic, obtuse or acute at the apex but not acuminate; when four-lobed upper ones slightly two-clefted.

Standard slightly shorter than (or sometimes equal to) keel-petal and longer than wings, keel-petal longer than wings (K≥S>W). Standard pale red-purple inside, whitish outside, 8.4-13.1 mm long with distinct claw, 5.4-7.7 mm wide; lamina (broadly to narrowly) elliptic to ovate, round or retuse at the apex with or without a point, inflexed-auriculate near the base, reflexing in anthesis from the part near the base; auricles reniform, well developed; claw whitish, (1.4-) 1.7-2.9 mm long. Wings deeper red-purple than standard, 6.8-11.0 mm long with distinct claw; lamina nar-rowly oblong, 4.5-7.1 mm long, 1.6-2.9 mm wide, auriculate at upper basal part, slightly or minutely auriculate or tapering at the lower basal part; claw 1.6-2.9 mm long, whitish. Keel-petal 8.5-13.5 mm long with distinct claw; lamina narrowly obovate, 6.6-9.7 mm long, 2.7-3.8 mm wide, paler than wings and standard, deepest in the apical part; claw 2.3-3.9 mm long, whitish. Stamens 10, nearly the same length, 8.2-13.2 mm long, diadelphous. Anthers elliptic, shallowly retuse at the apex, ca. 0.5 mm long, before anthesis yellow. Pistils 8.4-13.4 mm long; ovary elliptic, ca. 1.5 mm long at anthesis, pubescent, subsessile; style 7-8 mm long, pubescent at the basal part, glabrescent at the apical part.

Fruits compressed round or broadly elliptic, 5-7 mm long, 4-5 mm wide, subses-sile, slightly to densely pubescent or nearly glabrous.

Seeds reniform, ca. 3.5 mm long, ca. 2.5 mm wide.

It is interesting that the distributions of L. cyrtobotrya, L. Buergeri and this species are similar in Japan but quite different over their entire range (Figs. 37, 40, 46). This species, endemic to Japan, is characterized by well-developed reniform auricles of standards and glabrous upper surface of leaves. Nakai (1927, 29) recognized L. homoloba Nakai, L. nikkoensis Nakai, L. retusa Nakai, L. rotundiloba Nakai, and L. sendaica Nakai as distinct species based on the shape of the calyx-lobes and the length of the inflorescences. However, these characters are variable even in a single site. Koidzumi (1937) described two varieties within this species, var. emarginata and var. longiloba, based on the shape of the sitpules, calyx-lobes, bracts and bracteoles, and the length of the calyx. These characters are also quite variable.

This species is distinguishable from L. formosa subsp. velutina (Nakai) 8. Akiyama et H. Ohba by its well-developed auricles of the standard, shorter calyx-lobes, and glabrous upper surface of leaves (Plate 8, 9; Fig. 41). In western Japan where these two species grow together, various intermediate forms are found and are considered to be putative natural hybrids between them (Akiyama & Ohba, 1983a).
